Miami-Dade Hires AECOM for Protested $1.6B Sewer-Repairs Contract

Text size: AA
May 20 -- Miami-Dade County commissioners awarded a heavily lobbied contract Tuesday to a firm to oversee $1.6 billion in sewer pipe repairs.

AECOM Technical Services was hired for the $91 million , five-year contract, with two five-year extension options, over competitor CH2M Hill .

The unanimous commission vote marked the end to a nearly year-long saga to select the project and construction manager for the federally mandated upgrades to pipe and pump stations.

"I would like to thank the mayor for finally getting something done," Commissioner Audrey Edmonson said before the vote.

The selection process was marred by irregularities and allegations of wrongdoing. AECOM was ultimately cleared for the job by the inspector general and county department that handles contracting.

CH2M representatives present at Tuesday's meeting did not protest. Instead, commissioners went out of their way to praise both firms and note that CH2M could still bid for the actual projects that AECOM will help the Water and Sewer Department manage.
