The 150,000-sq-ft cancer center, named for Emily Couric, the late Virginia state senator, features modern architecture that differs markedly from the rest of the surrounding campus. It features a butterfly roof and an abundance of curves and columns.
Designed to achieve LEED-Silver standards, the new facility includes more than 21,000 sq ft of glass, allowing plenty of natural light. The cancer center includes three reflective gardens, including one on the roof, and was constructed with natural materials like bamboo flooring and locally sourced wood. Other materials included brick, sandstone and copper siding.
