The initial, $183-million phase of the Wallace Creek Regimental Complex at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., will provide a new home for four battalions and is being built as part of the Marines’ Grow the Force initiative.
Caddell Yates Joint Venture, a partnership between Caddell Construction of Montgomery, Ala., and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. of Philadelphia, Miss., received the design-build contract in September 2008 from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic District. The project, on an undeveloped parcel at the base, broke ground in February 2009.
The complex requires construction of 20 new structures with nearly 570,000 sq ft of space to house administration operations, maintenance, mission support, training, housing, dining and medical facilities for about 3,000 Marines. Each battalion headquarters is located near the barracks for its troops. The four battalions are arranged around the central operations, supply and maintenance facilities.
Scope included demolition and site clearing, grading and drainage, and upgrades to local utility lines. The HVAC system includes new LP gas-fired boilers for heating and an air-cooled water system for cooling.
The Wallace Creek project was more than half complete this spring, on target for a September 2011 finish.
