The new home for the Florida Marlins will be a baseball-only facility constructed on approximately 17 acres in the Little Havana section of Miami, at the former site of the Orange Bowl. The ballpark will seat 37,000 fans under a three-panel retractable roof.
A joint venture of Moss & Associates of Fort Lauderdale and Hunt Construction Group of Scottsdale, Ariz., in association with Mars Contractors of Miami, is managing the $515-million, public-private project.
Populous, formerly HOK Sport, of Kansas City, Mo., is the project’s designer. Miami-Dade County will own the facility.
Noting the timing of the project during a historic market downturn, Brett Atkinson, vice president of Moss & Associates, told Southeast Construction that the competitive bids from subcontractors and suppliers were giving Miami-Dade County and the Marlins “the best bang for their dollar.”
The structure was fully modeled in BIM using a combination of REVIT and Tekla structures, according to officials with Moss & Associates. The project team is aiming for LEED Silver certification.
The facility will be supported, in part, by 12 15- by 8-ft reinforced concrete “supercolumns.” Rising up to 130 ft, the supercolumns will support the 338,000-sq-ft, three-panel retractable roof that will move along two tracks on the ballpark’s north and south sides to shelter fans during Miami’s notorious rainstorms and sometimes brutal sunshine.
