Boeing Co. tapped three firms with connections to its existing facilities in North Charleston, S.C., to build a second final assembly plant for its 787 Dreamliner.
Boeing selected North Charleston as the site of its new facility after the South Carolina Legislature approved incentives valued at an estimated $450 million. The Boeing plant is expected to deliver about 3,800 jobs to the area.
BE&K/Turner, a joint venture of the BE&K Building Group of Greenville, S.C., and Turner Construction Co. of Charlotte, N.C., will serve as the general contractor and work with Melbourne, Fla.-based design partner BRPH Cos. on the $250-million design-build contract.
The JV team and Boeing broke ground on the project in November. BE&K/Turner officials say the 1,037-ft-long assembly plant will have 692,000 sq ft of covered space and 1.2 million sq ft of usable space.
Project components include a final assembly building, delivery center, administration building and support facilities.
The construction group also reported that more than 1,000 workers have been through orientation to work at the site.
BE&K/Turner expects to complete the building shell by February. Boeing, which is scheduling production to begin by July 2011, anticipates the plant will be able to deliver three 787 Dreamliners per month, with the first plane delivered in the first quarter of 2012.
The plant is being designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
