The United States Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., will be consolidating command and operations and providing office and conference space for nearly 2,800 military, civilian and contracting personnel. The two commands will retain separate identities.
Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Chantilly, Va., received the $300-million, design-build contract in 2008 and broke ground on the 700,000-sq-ft project in February 2009. Scope includes the headquarters building and four support and information technology structures, totaling about 40,000 sq ft; an energy plant with boilers, chillers, cooling towers, emergency power generation and load centers, fuel storage and a loading dock; and 2,500 parking spaces.
Fentress Architects of Washington, D.C., designed the complex. The six-story headquarters structure will provide separate wings for each command, joined by a common area; a ceremonial courtyard; display lobby; and command suites. The design reflects the base’s Georgian-style architecture while incorporating elements of English royal crescent architecture. The building is clad in precast brick and concrete wall panels. The team seeks LEED Silver.
The FORSCOM/USARC project is part of the Base Realignment and Closure initiative. Both commands are moving from Fort McPherson, Ga., which is closing. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, anticipates personnel will move into the building by September 2011.
