The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation has awarded a joint venture of Flatiron Constructors and the Lane Construction Corp. a $136-million design-build contract for improvements to the Interstate 85 corridor.

The project entails replacing the four-lane structure that carries I-85 across the? Yadkin River at Salisbury with an eight-lane span. The project includes replacing the parallel bridges crossing over the North Carolina Railroad tracks, replacing the bridge that carries U.S. Route 29/70 North over the river, widening 8 mi of I-85 from four to eight lanes and building noise walls.
Construction is expected to begin in October and be completed by January 2013.
