commentThe Carolinas Associated General Contractors announced the winners of its 2009 Pinnacle Awards for outstanding achievement in the commercial construction industry. The program recognizes both companies and projects.
CT Wilson Construction Co. of Durham, N.C., was recognized as the “Best General Contractor.” The competition’s judges gave CT Wilson top marks for its safety standards, contribution to industry and community, and the treatment of its employees.
The award for “Best Supplier/Service Company” went to Concrete Supply Co. of Charlotte, N.C. The company was noted for its “ exceptional company culture.”
CAGC presented two awards for “Best Building Project.” A joint venture of Rodgers/Rentenbach of Charlotte was recognized for its work on the Forsyth Medical Center Expansion and Renovation project in Winston-Salem, N.C. This contract involved five separate construction projects totaling more than 1 million square feet. The Rodgers/Rentenbach team delivered the Forsyth Medical Center Master Plan projects ahead of schedule and well below budget.
Skanska USA Building of Durham and Barnhill Contracting Co. of Raleigh shared the other “Best Building Project” award for their construction of the Raleigh Convention Center. This project represented the largest construction project ever undertaken by the city of Raleigh, and is the city’s first building to track for LEED certification.
The award for “Best Utility Project” was taken home by Crowder Construction Co. of Apex, N.C., for its James A. Loughlin Wastewater Treatment Plant project in Wilmington, N.C. This project, one of the largest in the history of New Hanover County, doubled the capacity of the existing 40-year-old plant to accommodate 16 million gallons per day.
CAGC’s “Build With the Best” award went to Bob Kipp, executive director of the Common Ground Alliance. This award recognizes an individual outside the construction industry whose efforts have contributed to its betterment and to the Carolinas’ overall economic welfare. The Common Ground Alliance is an underground utility safety and damage prevention organization.
A “Lifetime Honor” was presented to Stephen P. Gennett, retiring president and CEO of the Carolinas AGC. The award recognized Gennett’s 40-plus years of service to the construction industry via his work at two AGC chapters.
