CAGC Presents 2007 Pinnacle Awards

The Carolinas Associated General Contractors presented the winners of its 2007 Pinnacle Awards at its recent annual convention in Aventura, Fla. The Pinnacle Awards recognize achievement in the Carolinas commercial construction industry. CAGC’s awards recognize both construction companies and projects.

In the Building Project category, CAGC recognized two projects.

One award went to the Single Sisters House at Salem Academy & College in Winston-Salem, N.C. The contractor for the project was Frank L. Blum Construction Co. of Winston-Salem, N.C. This project restored the oldest building in the nation associated with women’s education, and the oldest building on any college campus in North Carolina.

Also, Harper Corp. General Contractors of Greenville, S.C., was recognized for its Hubbell Lighting Corporate Headquarters project in Greenville. This 850,000-sq-ft, four-story headquarters includes engineering labs, training facility, and was constructed to Silver LEED standards.

There were also two winners in the Highway-Heavy category. One award went to Sloan Construction Co. of Duncan, S.C., for its $36 million contract to provide improvements to the Interchange of U.S. Highway 176 and Interstate 585 in Spartanburg, S.C.

Also, Crowder Construction Co. of Charlotte was recognized for its U.S. Highway 76 Bridge Replacement project over the Chattooga River in Oconee County, S.C. This project included replacing the U.S. 76 bridge and demolishing a 100-year-old abandoned steel truss bridge over a whitewater river, located within a U.S. National Forest.

Additionally, Rodgers Builders of Charlotte, N.C., was named “Best General Contractor,” while Carolina Environmental Contracting of Mount Airy, N.C., was named “Best Subcontractor/Specialty Contractor.”

CAGC also presented its “Build With The Best” award, which is presented to an individual outside the construction industry “contributing to overall economic welfare of the Carolinas.” This year, this award went to Gordon Rutherford, with the University of North Carolina System.
