GUCA's Scholarship Foundation Awards First Scholarships

The Georgia Utility Contractors Association Scholarship Foundation recently presented the first in a series of scholarships to GUCA contractor members. Recipients of the scholarships included the following:

  • Donald Hall, son of Don and Peggy Hall, Sam Hall & Sons, Macon. Hall plans to study civil engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

  • Tyler S. Sims, son of Stephen and Gail Sims, Blair Construction, Evans. Sims plans to attend the University of Georgia.

  • Kayla C. Lamb, daughter of Alan and Dana Lamb, K.M. Davis Contracting, Co., Marietta. Lamb plans to attend the University of West Georgia.

The GUCA Scholarship Foundation is a 50/C (3) charitable foundation created to advance the college opportunities of children of GUCA contractor members and their employees.

Lord, Aeck & Sargent Recognized for Designing with Brick

Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architecture of Chapel Hill, N.C., recently was recognized with an award for "Unique Brick Detailing and Special Use of Brick" at the Design with Brick 2005 awards presentation, hosted by Brick Southeast and held during the AIA North Carolina Convention Awards in August.

Lord, Aeck & Sargent was recognized for the Biomolecular Research Building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. University administration wanted a "100-year" building that could stand the test of time on an academic campus. In keeping with the campus objectives for a fitting collegiate architecture, the design team chose brick as the primary design material. Triangle Brick Co. provided the brick for this project.

The nine-story building is connected to two adjacent research facilities and serves as the main entrance to the three-building complex. Brick is also used inside laboratory spaces.

McVeigh & Mangum Opens New Office in Atlanta

McVeigh & Mangum Engineering, an engineering firm based in Jacksonville, Fla., recently opened a new office in Atlanta. Chad McDonald will manage this location. The firm offers services in structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology and fire protection engineering.

SAKAI Names New Dealer for North Carolina

SAKAI America of Adairsville, Ga., recently appointed VanLott Inc. in Asheville, N.C., as an authorized dealer for North Carolina.

SAKAI offers vibratory soil and asphalt compactors, static rollers and soil stabilizers
