Despite Residential Decline, Contracts Up in June

Despite a significant decline in residential contracts, strong gains in the nonresidential and nonbuilding sectors were enough to keep the value of new Georgia contracts positive for the month of June, moving up roughly 26%, McGraw-Hill Construction reported. The value of contracts signed during June for future construction totaled nearly $3.2 billion.

Residential construction declined by 34% to a monthly total of about $1 billion. Nonresidential construction soared, however, more than doubling compared to last June to total about $1.5 billion. Nonbuilding construction did the same, with June’s total of $603.7 million well ahead of last June’s $258.9 million tally.

For the year-to-date, Georgia contract activity is now 4% behind the first half of 2006, with the current value of new contracts at about $13.7 billion. Nonresidential is now 36% ahead of last year’s pace with a total of $4.5 billion so far. The nonbuilding sector is also positive, with its total of roughly $2 billion about 12% above last year’s pace. Residential construction, estimated at $7.2 billion, is 21% behind.

Skanska USA to Build Student Center at Clayton State

The Atlanta office of Skanska USA Building announced it is providing pre-construction and construction management services for a new student activity center at Clayton State University in Morrow. Cooper Carry & Associates is the architect of record for this $13.3 million facility.

The 61,000-sq-ft building will serve as a recreational area and an activity hub for students.  It will include a ballroom that can be subdivided for small functions, a pre-function area, a warming kitchen, game rooms, a café, a fitness assessment office, student government offices with support spaces, a gymnasium, locker rooms, several multipurpose rooms and associated storage and ancillary spaces.

Groundbreaking is planned for later this summer; the facility is expected to open in the fall of 2008.

Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center Certified Gold

The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritgage Center with a Gold-level LEED rating in the category of new commercial construction. The project, owned by Gwinnett County, was the owner’s first green building. It was designed by Lord Aeck & Sargent of Atlanta, and built by Juneau Construction Co.

The GEHC facility teaches about the importance of water through a series of programs and interactive exhibits. The two-story, 59,000-sq-ft building uses 75% less potable water and 35% less energy than a conventional building of the same size. Also, it feature a 40,000-sq-ft green roof that is reported to be the largest sloped green roofing system in the United States.
