Kia Motors Announces $1.2B Plans for New Assembly Plant
Korean automaker Kia Motors announced plans in March to invest
$1.2 billion in a new automobile manufacturing plant in West
Point. McGraw-Hill Construction Dodge reported the complex
will include an engine plant, paint shop and welcome center.
Also, half of the 2,200-acre site, already chosen, will be
kept undeveloped for possible future expansion.
The city of West Point, in Troup County, will serve as the
project owner.
The project also includes an estimated $24.8 million in infrastructure
development work, as well as construction of a $20.2 million
training center, Dodge reported. A ceremonial groundbreaking
was scheduled to have taken place in April. Completion was
announced as targeted for 2009.
Georgia Contract Activity Continues Upbeat Pace
The value of Georgia construction contract activity continued
its momentum in February, gaining 12 percent compared to the
same period of a year ago, McGraw-Hill Construction reported.
The value of contracts signed during February for future construction
totaled about $2.1 billion, compared to the nearly $1.9 billion
reported a year ago. That equaled a 12 percent gain over the
year-ago figure.
The biggest market, residential, improved by 16 percent compared
to February 2005 and totaled nearly $1.4 billion, up from
last year's $1.2 billion. The nonresidential category continued
to show the greatest percentage improvement, jumping 38 percent
to tally $509.2 million for the month. The value of nonbuilding
contracts declined, however, falling by 30 percent to approximately
$245.4 million, compared to last February's $348.8 million.
Centex Set to Start $84.5M Cardiovascular Center
Centex Construction of Nashville was set to start construction
of an $84.5 million cardiovascular center for University Hospital
in Augusta. According to McGraw-Hill Construction Dodge, the
project would include four stories and measure nearly 181,400
sq. ft.
The project was scheduled to start construction in April.
HDR of Atlanta is the project architect.
InVision Developing Lofts Project in Atlanta's Old Fourth
Ward
Real estate developer The InVision Group of Atlanta intends
to open its mixed-use Tribute Lofts project in Atlanta's historic
Old Fourth Ward by the first part of 2007.
According to InVision, construction of the project's 147 lofts
and retail space began in January.
Tensar to Expand its Plant in Morrow
The Tensar Corp., citing double-digit sales growth, broke
ground on an expansion of its manufacturing facility in Morrow.
The expansion project will enable the company to more than double
the existing plant's capacity to manufacture Biaxial Geogrid.
Approximately 60,000 sq. ft. will be added to the existing
172,000 sq.-ft. facility, located on an 18-acre site about
15 mi. south of downtown Atlanta.
