ATL People Mover Contract
Awarded
Archer Western Contractors/Capital Contracting Co. Joint
Venture, together with Sumitomo Corp. of America and Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries America, was selected by the City of Atlanta
to construct an automated people mover system at the Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Airport. The SCOA/MHIA team will be
the systems supplier and also will be responsible for the
operation and maintenance option.
The contract, valued at approximately $191 million, includes
the design, engineering, construction as well as the operations
and maintenance of the new system. The new APM system will
consist of Mitsubishi's rubber wheel Crystal Mover vehicles,
which will run on a 1.5-mi. double-track, elevated guide way,
with three station stops: one at the airport's existing concourse,
one at the convention center at the city of College Park,
and the last at the new Consolidated Rental Car Facility.
Completion is targeted for fall 2008.
Residential Drives
October Gain
Despite downturns in the other sectors, a 16 percent increase
in the residential market drove the overall value of Georgia
contracts signed during the month of October for future construction
up 5 percent, McGraw-Hill Construction reported. Overall,
contracts for the month totaled nearly $2.3 billion, compared
to the roughly $2.1 billion reported last October.
Residential was the only positive sector for the month. The
16 percent gain in that market resulted in nearly $1.4 billion
worth of contracts, compared to last October's nearly $1.2
billion. The value of nonresidential contracts fell by 8 percent,
to approximately $531.5 million, compared to last year's $574.8
million. The nonbuilding category also dropped 8 percent,
to total $367.1 million, compared to last October's $398.2
million.
For the year-to-date, the overall value of contract activity
is roughly 13 percent ahead of the pace of the first ten months
of 2004, with about $22.6 billion in contracts reported. Residential,
with approximately $13.8 billion in new contracts, is 11 percent
ahead of 2004's pace. The nonresidential category is 14 percent
ahead for the year, and totals nearly $5.8 billion. The nonbuilding
category is 23 percent ahead of last year's pace, with almost
$3.1 billion in new contracts reported.
HNTB Selected for
GDOT Design Project
The Georgia Department of Transportation has selected HNTB
to design the State Road 400/Interstate 85 Connector Ramps
project in Fulton County. As the prime consultant, HNTB will
manage all engineering and design services.
The project, part of Gov. Sonny Perdue's "Fast Forward
Program," involves modification of the S.R. 400/I-85
interchange to add connector ramps from I-85 southbound to
S.R. 400 northbound, and from S.R. 400 southbound to I-85
northbound.
