Nemours Breaks Ground on Children’s Hospital

Nemours recently broke ground on the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Lake Nona’s medical city in Orlando. The 620,000-sq-ft children’s hospital will include 95 beds and serve as the core of a 60-acre pediatric health campus featuring a children’s clinic, emergency department, diagnostic and ambulatory programs and education and research centers.

The hospital plans to open its $400 million facility in 2012. Site work is scheduled to begin in June.

The campus will provide medical services, biomedical research, medical and allied health training, educational programs and pediatric prevention services and child advocacy programs.

The Nemours Children’s Hospital is being built to achieve LEED certification.

Skanska USA Building of Orlando will serve as the construction manager. Design consultants include Stanley Beaman & Sears, Perkins+Will and IDEO.

Florida’s Dismal News Continues: 43% February Decline

McGraw-Hill Construction, publisher of Southeast Construction, reported that the value of new Florida contracts signed in February declined by 43% overall, compared to the same period of a year ago. According to the latest report, the value of February contracts for future construction totaled approximately $1.7 billion, compared to the preceding February’s nearly $3 billion total.

For the most recent month, two of the three sectors used by McGraw-Hill Construction experienced 60% declines. Residential totaled $483.9 million, down from last year’s $1.2 billion. Meanwhile, the nonresidential sector tallied $453.6 million, down from last February’s $1.1 billion. The nonbuilding sector grew by 18%, however, to total approximately $781 million for the month.

Stiles Starts on Sunrise Public Safety Building

Stiles Construction of Fort Lauderdale has begun work on a $30 million Public Safety Complex for the City of Sunrise. The 109,000-sq-ft facility will house the city's police and fire service headquarters. The project includes a 17,850-sq-ft fire station and 4,900-sq-ft central energy plant.

The complex is scheduled for completion in March 2011.

Architectural Design Group of Winter Park, Fla., designed the building. The fire station will include three drive-through apparatus bays, a full dormitory, kitchen, training rooms and offices.

Moss & Associates Building Facility for Leon Medical Centers

Moss & Associates of Fort Lauderdale has started fast-track construction of Leon Medical Centers’ sixth health-care facility in Miami-Dade County.

Moss expects to complete the 84,670-sq-ft Leon Medical Centers-Flagler in November.

The four-story facility was designed by MGE Architects, Coral Gables.

Suffolk Lands $14M FIU International and Public Affairs Project

Suffolk Construction of West Palm Beach was awarded a $14 million contract to construct the new Florida International University School of International and Public Affairs building.

Scheduled for completion in August 2010, the five-story 58,408 sq-ft building at the school’s University Park Campus will provide space for faculty and graduate student research, lectures, workshops, performances and conferences.

The structural steel and concrete structure will have three auditoriums on the ground level, with the largest one cantilevering 40 ft with a Japanese Garden situated underneath.

The building is being designed to achieve LEED silver certification, and will feature waterless urinals, a green roof and other features.

Construction was scheduled to begin in April.

Arquitectonica designed the project. Engineers include Pistorino & Alam Consulting Engineers, MEP Engineering and Terra Civil Engineering.

GATES to Build Fort Lauderdale Fire Station #49

The City of Fort Lauderdale has awarded Naples, Fla.-based GATES a contract to build Fire Station 49.

The 11,820 sq-ft , two-story facility will accommodate three apparatus bays, living and working areas for a 10-person shift and capacity and clearance for three fire trucks. The ground floor will include the apparatus bays and 2,000 sq ft of community and operational space. The second floor houses the living spaces, offices, dayroom and gymnasium.

The architect of record is Pierce Goodwin Alexander and Linville.

Work Starts on Sarasota Charter School

The ADP Group has completed design of Imagine Charter School at Palmer Ranch in Sarasota. The U-shaped, 54,375-sq-foot K-8 charter school includes 45 classrooms, media center, administration and multi-purpose space and a playground/recreation area. 

DooleyMack Constructors of Sarasota is fast-tracking the $5.5 million project, with completion scheduled for July.

Imagine Schools operates 73 public charter schools in 12 states and the District of Columbia, serving approximately 37,000 students nationwide.

New Control Tower for Ocala Airport

Edwards Construction Services of Ocala recently started construction on a 91-ft-tall air traffic control tower at Ocala International Airport. Construction is scheduled to complete by September.
