February Another Bad Month for Project Starts

McGraw-Hill Construction, publisher of Southeast Construction, reported that the value of new Florida contracts declined by 46% in February, compared to the same period of a year ago. That follows a 43% overall decline in January. According to this latest report, the value of new contracts totaled just under $2.4 billion, down from last February’s $4.4 billion total.

All three of the construction sectors used by McGraw-Hill Construction experienced significant, double-digit percentage declines. Residential again led the decline, falling 56% to total nearly $1.1 billion for the month. Nonresidential fell again, too, this time by 40% compared to last February, and totaled roughly $825.3 million. The nonbuilding segment fell 19% to total about $496 million.

Through the first two months of 2008, the values of all three sectors are considerably behind 2007’s early pace. Residential is 51% behind the first two months of 2007, and is valued at nearly $2.2 billion. However, nonresidential is also significantly behind last year, by 36%, and has experienced nearly $1.8 billion in new starts. The nonbuilding sector is 40% behind last year, with about $1 billion in new projects.
