Related Announces Oasis on the Bay

The Related Group of Florida announced Oasis on the Bay in Miami. The company stated the project is slated to break ground in the spring and will be comprised of twin 20-story buildings with 475 units.

The waterfront condominiums will feature "smart building" technology.

Elkins Building $230M Old San Jose Project

Elkins Constructors of Jacksonville was expecting to start vertical construction this month on the $230 million Old San Jose on The River project it is building for McGarvey Residential Communities.

The Jacksonville project includes 218 condominiums and town homes located in 17 low- and mid-rise buildings, as well as a 2,100 sq.-ft. infinity-edge swimming pool, outdoor living room, fitness center and three guest suites.

Elkins is serving as the construction manager. Looney, Ricks and Kiss are the project architects.

Suffolk, Song Design-Building Port St. Lucie Civic Center

Suffolk Florida and Song + Associates, both of West Palm Beach, have been selected by the city of Port St. Lucie to construct a $25 million, two-story civic center that will serve as the cornerstone of the new City Center development.

The proposed design, which will encompass 100,000 sq. ft. and be the focal point of the town square plaza, will consist of a theatre, banquet hall, lobby, multipurpose gymnasium, exhibition space, art gallery, racquetball courts, fitness center, outdoor patio courtyard and café with a breezeway dining area. It will feature a Mediterranean architectural style, and will be capable of withstanding a Category 5 hurricane.

Suffolk Florida plans to break ground on the project at the end of 2006, with completion scheduled for early 2008. Further development of Port St. Lucie will include an $85 million downtown project consisting of a mixture of restaurants, retail shops and commercial and residential space.

Florida Contract Activity Drops Back in February

After starting 2006 with a mild increase in January, the value of new contracts in Florida fell back slightly in February, McGraw-Hill Construction reported. The total value of new contracts signed in February for future construction totaled roughly $4.8 billion, down 5 percent from last February.

The value of nonresidential contracts declined 1 percent compared to last February for a $666.1 million total. The residential sector also fell, by 4 percent compared to a year ago, for an estimated $3.6 billion total. Nonbuilding construction - which includes roads, bridges, sewer and other - fell 9 percent to total approximately $516.4 million.

Toll Brothers Breaks Ground on Singer Island Condo Tower

Toll Brothers broke ground on Ocean's Edge at Singer Island, an 18-story residential tower that will feature residences ranging from 2,812 sq. ft. to nearly 8,000 sq. ft. of air-conditioned living space. A penthouse unit will measure 11,600 sq. ft. Prices range from $1.6 million to $4.5 million.

$850 Million Blue Rose Resort Planned for Orlando

Miami-based developer CMA Cos. announced plans to build an $850 million, 39-story Blue Rose luxury condominium hotel and resort project, located near the Orange County Convention Center along International Drive. The company said the development is "inspired by the big city sophistication of New York, the sizzling passion of Miami and the nighttime energy of Las Vegas." According to the company, the Blue Rose will feature 1,300 hotel residences, a 1,000-seat theatre, five restaurants, a day spa and a conference center with 75,000 sq. ft. of meeting space.

Stiles Named GC for Miami Dolphins Practice Facility

Stiles Construction Co. of Fort Lauderdale has begun construction on the Miami Dolphins indoor practice facility, located next to the team's existing training facility in Davie.

The 96,600 sq.-ft. air-supported structure will be manufactured and installed by Air Structures American Technologies of Rye Brook, N.Y. Completion is scheduled for July, coinciding with the opening of Dolphins training camp. The structure will be capable of simulating colder or drier climates. The Dolphins also plan to utilize the facility for the organization's youth and community initiatives.

Approximately 13 tons of the liner fabric and 42.5 tons of cable will form the exterior of the structure.

Creative Wins More Than $40 Million in Contracts

Creative Contractors of Clearwater has signed a $14 million contract with the District School Board of Pasco County to build Trinity Oaks Elementary School in New Port Richey. The company also signed a $21 million contract with the school board to perform various renovations and expansions of multiple schools in the south-central part of the county.

The company is also progressing on an $8.4 million Dunedin Community Center project for the city of Dunedin. The building has been designed to obtain LEED certification upon completion. The 42,000 sq.-ft. facility includes a multipurpose room with a stage and basketball court, classrooms, offices, dance and exercise rooms and a fitness center.

Spillis Candela DMJM Designing Broward Co. Children's Museum

Coral Gables-based Spillis Candela DMJM, in association with Glavovic Studio, was selected to design the new Broward County Children's Museum and Reading Room in Davie. The new integrated cultural complex is expected to be 60,000 sq. ft. and is estimated to cost $15 million.

Spillis Candela anticipates combining both museum and library functions under a single roof. The firm anticipates using sustainable design features with the goal of achieving LEED certification, which was an expressed interest of Broward County, the Young At Art Children's Museum and Spillis Candela DMJM.

Southern Construction Design-Building at Orlando Executive Airport

Southern Construction Group has been selected by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority as design-builder for the new administration building and customs facility at Orlando Executive Airport. The $2.2 million, single-story building will measure 10,000 sq. ft. and is scheduled for completion in January 2007.

The design-build team includes MLM-Martin Architects, S.G.M. Engineering, Burton Braswell Middlebrooks, R.W. Armstrong, JCR Consulting and QORE Property Sciences.

HuntonBrady Designing Educational Projects

HuntonBrady Architects of Orlando is designing the Partnership Center of Southwest Volusia. The facility is being built through a partnership between Deltona, DeBary, Orange City, Volusia County, Daytona Beach Community College and the West Volusia Chamber of Commerce.

The shared two-story, 100,000 sq.-ft. facility will house a corporate training center and meeting space for conferences, college classes, cultural and community events and exhibits. The $23 million project is scheduled for groundbreaking this year.

The firm also has been selected to design a new education building for Corinthian Colleges AMI in Daytona Beach. The one-story, 89,000 sq.-ft. building will house the college's motorcycle and marine repair and training facilities.

Daytona Beach-based American Motorcycle Institute (AMI) was recently purchased by Corinthian Colleges, a largest post-secondary education company.

Kaufman Lynn Tops Off FAU Library Project

Kaufman Lynn General Contractors of Boca Raton hosted a topping-off ceremony for Florida Atlantic University's S.E. Wimberly Library, which is undergoing a $4.5 million expansion and renovation.

The 22,000 sq.-ft., five-story addition, on the Boca campus, is on schedule for an August completion.

The architect for the project is Williamson Dacar Associates of Safety Harbor.

Tilt-Con Working on Several Projects

Altamonte Springs-based Tilt-Con announced it has started work on several projects.
The tilt-up contractor has begun raising panels for Dolphin Park of Commerce in Miami. This 314,800 sq.-ft. project consists of three one-story buildings and requires about 80 panels.

The company also broke ground on the Keiser Olympus Office Building, a two-story, 39,411 sq.-ft. project. Tilt-Con has begun raising panels for Sarasota II, a three-story building that will be used for office space at Keiser College. Sarasota II totals 76,225 sq. ft. and has approximately 67 panels, ranging from 16,410 to 97,160 pounds. The general contractor for both projects is Chinook/Keenan Development.

Tilt-Con also is following up on its tilt-up work at the recently completed Harley Davidson Seminole in Sanford by managing the construction of another Harley dealership in Sunrise. This two-story, 76,000 sq.-ft. building includes about 38 panels, ranging from 12,660 to 110,360 pounds.
