Highwoods Properties Developing Raleigh Office Building

Highwoods Properties announced it will begin development of GlenLake Six, a $22.6 million, 122,000-sq-ft multi-tenant Class-A office building with structured parking in the Glenwood/Creedmoor submarket of Raleigh. This will be the third of seven buildings Highwoods plans for its GlenLake office park.

Construction on GlenLake Six was set to begin in March, with completion anticipated for the second quarter of 2008.

Double-Digit Declines in January for Both Carolinas

The value of new contracts signed in January for future construction activity decreased by 12% in North Carolina and by 25% in South Carolina, compared to the same period of a year ago, McGraw-Hill Construction reported.

In North Carolina - which totaled nearly $1.9 billion for the month - the biggest dropoff came in the residential sector, which fell 21% to total just over $1.1 billion, down from last January's $1.4 billion. The volume of nonbuilding contracts also fell, by 8%, to tally about $211.9 million for the month, down from the $230.7 million of a year ago.

South Carolina experienced major double-digit percentage declines in the residential and nonbuilding segments. Residential contracts fell by 32% to total $480.6 million for the month, compared to last January's $707.8 million. The value of nonbuilding contracts declined by 40% compared to last January for a total of $70.6 million. The nonresidential category improved however, increasing by 9% to tally $222.5 million for the month.

Hoar Completes Raleigh's First Integrative Health Care, Fitness Center

Birmingham, Ala.-based Hoar Construction recently completed a 187,000-sq-ft comprehensive health-care facility for the American Institute of Health and Fitness in Raleigh, N.C. This new facility is the first integrative health care and fitness center in the Raleigh area.

It incorporates all necessary ancillary health services including medical and surgical physician offices, a surgery center, dental health center, radiology services, laboratories, physical therapy, pharmacy, sports medicine, a fitness center, spa, clinical research, voluntary health organizations, a café, daycare services and a 300-seat conference center.

Design for New Hospital in Elkin, N.C., Under Way

Nashville-based Hart Freeland Roberts Architects and Engineers has completed a campus master plan and has been approved for preliminary design for Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, N.C.

The master plan has been the first step in a planned $25 million expansion and renovation of the hospital.

The hospital is managed by Alliant Management Services, based in Louisville, Ky.
