North Carolina Research
Campus Lab Building Awarded to Turner Construction
Castle & Cooke has awarded Turner Construction Co. the
contract to build its Core Laboratory Building. This building
will serve as the anchor for the North Carolina Research Campus,
a 350-acre biotechnology center located on the former Fieldcrest
Cannon Mills site in downtown Kannapolis.
Currently scheduled for completion in late 2007, the Core
Laboratory Building will house multiple laboratories for private
enterprise as well as a core laboratory which will support
the University of North Carolina research institutes, private
industry and other institutes established by universities
throughout the state to be located on the campus.
The 311,000 sq.-ft. building is being erected upon the highest
point on the Central Campus. The building will be constructed
with a standing-seam copper roof and a cupola which will cap
the four-story brick structure. The building was designed
by Narmour Wright Creech Architecture of Charlotte.
North and South Carolina
Off to Slow Start in '06
The value of new contracts signed in January for future construction
activity in North Carolina was flat compared to a year ago,
while South Carolina experienced a 3 percent drop for the
month, McGraw-Hill Construction reported recently.
North Carolina's approximately $2 billion total for the month
was roughly $500,000 higher than last January. Residential
was the only positive sector, improving by 24 percent compared
to last January and tallying nearly $1.4 billion. The value
of nonresidential contracts was down 1 percent to approximately
$388 million. The value of nonbuilding contracts fell 53 percent
to about $230.2 million for the month, compared to last January's
$492.3 million.
In South Carolina, the January 2006 total of nearly $836.3
million was down by about $30 million compared to last year.
Residential contracts increased by 1 percent for the month
to total roughly $599.3 million, compared to last January's
$593.3 million. The nonbuilding sector was also positive,
with a 35 percent jump, for an overall total of nearly $105.7
million. A 32 percent decline in nonresidential activity more
than offset any gains, however, as that market totaled about
$131.3 million for the month.
