Hammond Road Detention Center
Project Cost: $139 million
Wake County, N.C., has embarked on a $139-million, 414,600-sq-ft expansion of its Hammond Road Detention Center, a medium-security facility.
The three-level, flat-roof detention facility is a hybrid of the cast-in-place concrete superstructure at the dormitory section and steel frame for the administration section, with a concrete block and brick trim exterior. It has aluminum windows and a curtain wall at the entrance. A cast-in-place spread-footing foundation, with aggregate pier soil reinforcement, supports the structure. The project required soil nailing, shoring and underpinning during foundation work. The project team aims for LEED certification. The scope includes a 300-space, four-level, above-grade parking structure.
When complete, the center will include 165,000 sq ft of new inmate housing; 92,000 sq ft of administration, magistrate, booking, processing and other program spaces; 70,000 sq ft of inmate services, visitation, infirmary and food service; 25,000 sq ft of forensics laboratories; and 62,600 sq ft of physical plant and warehouse spaces.
