South Cobb Tunnel
Project Cost: $305 million
The South Cobb Tunnel – the largest capital improvement in Cobb County Water System’s history – will provide long-term sewer capacity and equalization for the Sweetwater Creek and Nickajack Creek basins in western and southern Cobb County.
Shea – Traylor J.V., a joint venture of J.F. Shea Construction, Camarillo, Calif., and Traylor Brothers, Evansville, Ind., broke ground on the 6-mi-long, 27-ft-diameter tunnel in July and will mine 29,000 lin ft with a main-beam tunnel-boring machine. Depths range from 150 ft to 400 ft. The scope of work includes five other drill and shoot connecting tunnels and adits, for a total of more than 5,000 ft; two 46-ft-diameter lined shafts; a larger shaft; and a 130-million-gallons-per-day, 210-ft-deep lift station at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility.
When complete in 2014, it will allow Cobb to eliminate two major pumping stations and about 87,000 lin ft of aging sewer line and force main.
