Malcom Randall VA Medical Center
Project Cost: $86 million
The Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding its Macolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla., adding a five-story, 245,000-sq-ft bed tower.
Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta began construction on the $86-million addition in August. This new bed tower will provide 240 private patient rooms with space in each room for family members.
The project also includes construction of a satellite emergency generator building and the removal and upgrade of two existing chiller and cooling towers.
During the interior demolition and renovation, crews will replace windows, remove upper-floor, exterior precast panels and renovate where new pedestrian bridges tie together the new and existing facilities at multiple floors. All activities require extensive scheduling efforts to minimize the effect on the operational facility.
