ECUA Central Water Reclamation Facility
Project Cost: $102.8 million
Brasfield & Gorrie of Birmingham, Ala., began construction in August 2008 on an 22.5-million-gallon-per-day advanced wastewater treatment facility for the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority in Cantonment, Fla. The new plant will replace the aging Main Street Wastewater Treatment Plant located near the waterfront in downtown Pensacola, which sustained serious damage during Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
The $102.8-million project is located on a 96-acre greenfield site 25-mi inland, making it less exposed to hurricane-force winds. All components of the new plant must be installed and operational within two yeas.
Brasfield & Gorrie and its subcontractors will move about 1 million cu yd of soil; place approximately 48,000 cu yd of concrete; install nearly 20.5 mi of pipe ranging in size from .5 in. to 54 in. in diameter; install more than 1,300 valves; set more than 80 pumps ranging in size up to 150 horsepower; and construct more than 36 structures and the supporting systems.
Various lift stations located along power transmission lines will pump raw sewage to the plant. Once the sewage is processed, the plant will provide effluent to industrial clients and others.
