Award-Winning Projects
Following is information on some concrete-paving projects
from the southeastern United States that have been recognized
by either the American Concrete Pavement Association or the
Southeast chapter of the ACPA.
APAC-Southeast's Ballenger Paving Division recently took
home the top prize in the ACPA's national Excellence in Paving
competition in the Divided Highways (Rural) category and also
was named the "Best Highway Project."
Working to build the future Interstate 26 in Madison County,
N.C., for the North Carolina Department of Transportation,
APAC paved nearly 10.5 mi. of highway through mountainous
terrain. According to ACPA, the project featured a "nearly
constant" 6 percent grade that required APAC to coordinate
its efforts so that it was always paving downhill, so as to
eliminate any chance of pavement irregularities.
APAC-Southeast Ballenger Division also was recognized by
the Southeast chapter of ACPA for its Interstate 75 Lane Replacement
project for the Georgia DOT in Peach, Crawford and Bibb counties.
The project involved the complete removal and replacement
of 10 mi. of a 39-year-old outside lane of I-75 south of Macon.
The contractor was only allowed to close lanes from 8 p.m.
to 6 a.m. on the middle lane and until 10 a.m. on the outside
reconstructed lane each day. The contractor removed and replaced
20.1 lane mi. in 16 weeks, of which the actual paving took
11 weeks
Costello Industries of College Park, Ga., recently
repaired the runway at the Naval Air Station in Mayport,
Fla., near Jacksonville. The nearly $3.5 million contract
included full- and partial-depth concrete replacement, repair
and rehabilitation of existing concrete pavements, resealing
the joints using silicone and also milling and overlaying
the asphalt portions of the runway.
The contractor was able to complete the project approximately
60 days ahead of schedule. This project was recognized by
the Southeast ACPA's SCAN awards program.
Ajax Paving Industries of Nokomis, Fla., was a
finalist in the Reliever and General Aviation Airports category
of ACPA's most recent national Excellence in Paving competition.
For its Taxiway C and Runway 8-26 project, the contractor
placed 72,000 sq. yds. of a concrete overlay for the city
of Fernandina Beach's Municipal Airport in 11 days.
The project required placement of the 6-in. concrete overlay
directly on top of the existing runway, and a 5-in. overlay
on top of the taxiway.
